2. Explain what each of the following are and how they relate to alchemy: Philosopher’s stone, elixir, and transmutation.
3. Some alchemists were mystics, metallurgists, philosophers and physicians. How did each of these roles align with the foundations of alchemy?
4. Alchemists used symbolism and images to describe their work with other alchemists they knew but conceal it from others. The image and text below are from an alchemy textbook, The Twelve Keys of Basil Valentine, published in 1599. Valentine was a German alchemist who wrote 12 chapters (or keys) describing processes for creating the philosopher’s stone. Use the attached list of symbols and their meaning to (try to) conjecture what the figures in the image mean and how they relate to the text.
