A Raisin in the Sun – Lorraine Hansberry

Question:

Is the Younger family doing what is best for them by moving into their new home?

Your obvious thesis argument statement would look like this:

In Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun, the Younger family is/is not doing what is best for them by moving into their new home. (You decide the “is or is not.”)

USE THE ABOVE THESIS WORD FOR WORD (just choose “is” or “is not”).

Remember to give your paper a title.

Write a “generic” introduction (explained in class) that can lead into your thesis that sits as the last sentence of the introduction.

Your thesis must be placed as the LAST sentence of your introductory paragraph. Along with your argument, the thesis statement itself must also contain the name of the text and the author’s name (just like above).

You will be giving THREE (3) reasons to support your argument (and place each reason as a topic sentence of a new paragraph).

After stating reason one as the topic sentence of a new paragraph that begins after your intro paragraph, go on to explain reason one; then further support your reason by quoting (not paraphrasing) from the text; don’t forget to cite using MLA citation. Choose the best quote that supports your reason. Then explain why this particular quote further supports your reason. Do the same thing for reason two and three.

You should have a total of THREE (3) quotes from the text, one for each of your reasons.

Use ONE library database source to further support your argument. You must use for your source a critical, peer reviewed journal article from a library database (NO GOOGLE!) OR a published book that contains critical, peer reviewed articles. Also, play reviews and newspaper articles are NOT considered research. Remember to cite your source.

Compose a conclusion paragraph (restate thesis and supporting reasons in this paragraph).

TWO AND A HALF PAGE MINIMUM (not 2 and a quarter, 2 and a half!), Times New Roman Font, 12 point, double spacing.

Works Cited page should have its own (4th page) in your paper, showing your text and outside source.

3rd person (NO “I” OR “YOU”).

This paper can be handed in before the due date. However, it must be handed in by the date on your syllabus schedule. If not handed in on that day at the start of class, it will be considered late, and you will receive the penalties discussed in your syllabus. PLAN AHEAD AND DON’T PROCRASTINATE BY WAITING UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!
