Read the following short story and craft an analytical essay between 750-1000 words.
; While reading the story, take marginal notes (themes/techniques) and highlight key passages.
; Build an outline to organize your ideas before writing your essay. Your outline should develop from a
focused thesis statement.
; Your essay should include:
1) An introduction that states your thesis and identifies your body topics
2) Body paragraphs that include quotes from the short story
3) A conclusion that revisits your argument and body paragraphs
*You should comment on the author’s use of literary techniques and devices. You may consider the following list:
Allegory, alliteration, allusion, analogy, characterization, comparison, contrast, description, dialogue,
diction, figurative language, flashback, foreshadowing, imagery, irony, metaphor, narrative point of view,
repetition, setting, simile, symbolism, syntax, and tone.
In order to simplify your approach to these options (of which there are many others), you may identify at least
three that are relevant to the short story, and you may then comment on the author’s use of those
techniques/devices to help develop your argument.
