tudents are expected to know, understand, and comply with their institution’s policy concerning academic honesty, cheating, and plagiarism while completing all assignments, quizzes, or exams. You certify that the work and submissions in an assignment were generated independently, developed during the assignment, quiz, or exam and that you did not receive any external help or aid during the creation of your work or answers except those permitted by your instructor.
If you have not already, please be sure to hit ‘agree’ on the user agreement for Turnitin, the newly-implemented C4 plagiarism detector. Any student that does not agree to have their work checked for plagiarism by Turnitin will not have their midterm marked.
If you are attaching a file, please be sure to clearly title it with your name and course section. Please attach your files as WORD documents (.docx). You may type your responses directly into C4 but please be aware that might affect your formatting and, thus, your grade.
Hello everyone and welcome to the module for our midterm! It will be open from 4:30 pm until 7:30 pm today, June 4th. Remember to hit submit before it closes, as the module will close promptly at 7:30.
Write an essay response to ONE of the prompts provided. Your response will be evaluated based on content, form, close reading, thoughtfulness, quotation integration, clarity, and grammar/spelling/punctuation.
The paper should be approximately 400-500 words long and must follow MLA citation guidelines. The paper must contain the following elements:
– An introduction (including a clear thesis statement), conclusion, and main discussion section of 3-4 paragraphs.
– Remember to support your ideas with close reading and specific evidence
– Include a minimum of two direct quotations from the text. (Don’t forget in-text citations!)
– Remember: a summary ≠ an essay
OPTION 1:
In “Just Don’t Call Us Late To Supper,” Chelsea Vowel writes that, in reference to Indigenous peoples, we should use the word peoples vs. people (10). Since the word people is already plural, this can be confusing. Write an essay that explores why she makes this distinction. Why is it especially important when referring to Indigenous groups?
OPTION 2:
In “Semiotics for Beginners,” Daniel Chandler reports that “[Roland] Barthes saw myth as serving the ideological interests of the bourgeoisie” (16). Write an essay that explores this idea by denaturalizing the famous image of the young black soldier (14). What is its denotation vs. its connotation? How might bourgeois ideology be being transmitted through this image?
OPTION 3:
In Chapter 13, Vowel writes that “the idea that Canadian society is evolving and progressing is an important part of the colonial imaginary. The myth is that progress is tied to the passage of time, thus, things are always inevitably getting better” (119). What is the “colonial imaginary” and why does it rely upon locating “injustice in the past, and only rarely in contemporary contexts” (120)?
