ES 324 – Writing Your Persuasive Essay
Your Thesis
The task of your paper is to make an argument based on research and to prove your argument with evidence. Your argument should be stated in the opening paragraph; this will be your central thesis.
Organizing Your Argument
Generally, in a paper this short (7 pages double spaced) you prove your central thesis by making three arguments or points.
Let’s say your paper is about Chicana Feminism. Your central thesis might be: “Because of male domination within the leadership, Chicanas took it upon themselves to change the movement, making it stronger along the way.”
So you are arguing that the movement was male dominated and thus flawed, and that Chicanas changed the nature of the movement by introducing feminine concepts.
You can prove this argument by introducing three major points. The will help you to organize your paper and into arguments.
Argument #1: First you have to prove your point that the movement was very macho. This helps you to explain the problem.
Argument #2: Now you look at some key examples of how Chicanas changed the movement, took on new roles, created new organizations, wrote new theories etc. You will look at how they organized within their communities.
Argument #3: Finally, you will discuss how they changed the movement. What are the lasting effects? How are female concerns now centered?
All of this is done to support your central thesis.
The Paragraph as a Building Block
Make the paragraph the building blocks of your argument. Your paragraphs should be focused, cover only one topic, and used only to prove your central thesis. Make sure your paragraph is well-organized by giving it a thesis. This will help you to write a concise and focused paragraph.
Remember your three arguments that are used to prove your central thesis. Each argument can be composed of several paragraphs. Going back to my example above, let’s take Argument #1 – that the movement was very macho. Perhaps you can have a paragraph that looks at Chicano views of women in the movement. You paragraph thesis could be something like this: “Men believed that leadership was a masculine role and that women were too timid to lead.” This will help you to guide the paragraph so that you do not move away from this point. This should be done with all of your paragraphs.
Your Intro and Conclusion
Your introduction should (1) introduce your topic, (2) state your central thesis, and (3) briefly discuss the three points you will cover in order to prove your thesis. You should not begin discussing your research in the introduction.
The conclusion restates your argument, this time with the weight of your research behind you. This means that you can more forcefully make your argument because you have just laid out your arguments in the preceding paragraphs. This is a chance to sum up your paper and close with a few forceful statements.
Making Arguments
In this essay you need to do more than to make logical, well-supported statements. Ultimately, your essay needs to make a claim; it needs to make an argument. This is easy because the Chicano Movement was a counter cultural, anti-racist movement of resistance. The Movement had many detractors: men, mainstream society, racists, the older generation, the political establishment, the police, the military, the FBI, etc. The task is to enter into this conversation. Try to find out and understand the positions of both sides. This will allow you to effectively enter into the argument and will give you material to write about. Your arguments should be a response to what OTHERS say.
