More than 5 paragraphs. You are to base your essay on one story or a combination of stories. You are to connect a theme, of your choice to a literary element. It is best to discuss no more than two literary elements within a single essay in order to completely exhaust possible sources of evidence from your primary source (s). Too often essays are underdeveloped because arbitrary decisions are made of what proof/evidence to use when more effort should be made to find as much concrete evidence
from the story (ies) to support your thesis. The thesis determines how much proof you must provide, not an arbitrary decision on your part. Please, for your sake, review all the documents found in folders from previous weeks that contain the basic handouts you will need to develop your essay. You are accountable for the application of the material posted in the key modules (Short Story Elements and Literary Analysis). As I have said previously, these two modules are the foundation for this course. A month into the course, many of you have yet to read and STUDY this material.
(1) Make sure you underline your thesis statement. Place in brackets at the end of your introduction [the specific introductory Method(s) used]. Also, place in brackets at the end of your conclusion to your essay [the type of concluding method used]. This information is found in the document titled “ Elements of a Good Literary Essay.”
(2) For each body paragraph, underline the topic sentence of the paragraph as well as the concluding sentence of the paragraph.
(3) At the end of the conclusion of your essay, [place in brackets the specific type of concluding method you used.] See previous folder on Aspects of Literary Aspects.
(4) Documentation: You must do in-text citations for any material from the primary source (short story, poem, play, outside resources). In-text citations must be done for material that is a direct quote from a source, summary from a source, or paraphrase from a source. Use MLA formatting for your in-text citations. Make sure that your Works Cited page is, in fact, on a separate page but a part of submission folder.
