Introduction
The nature of the health care services that patients receive from healthcare facilities can be evaluated by conducting research structured to gather relevant data. Similarly, Evidence-based practice expects nurses to appraise their current mode of delivering the best healthcare services to their clients. Therefore, this essay selects and discusses a statistical test that is commonly used in nursing research. Statistical tests that are widely used in nursing research include paired sample t-tests and independent t-test. This essay, discusses the independent t-test.
Independent t-Test
This test is used when comparing two independent groups on a continuous dependent variable. Like the name, the involved groups must have different participants, be independent, and the dependent variables must be continuous (Goldsmith, 2019). This statistical measure can be applied at a nominal level of measurement.
Use of Independent t-test in a Nursing Research Study
The independent t-test can be used by a researcher to establish whether there is a significant difference between the depression scores for unemployed and employed caregivers. In this study, the dependent variable is the depression score. Assuming the employed caregivers had the following results, Mean (M)=13.41 and the Standard Deviation (SD)= 10.29 and the unemployed caregivers had the following results; M=19.60 and SD= 10.29. The (p-value) significance of 0.007 implies that the mean depression score between the unemployed and employed caregivers is statistically essential because it has clinical importance in that the unemployed caregivers are likely to report higher levels of depression.
Conclusion
Statistical tests are fundamental tools in nursing research studies as they help the research in critically analyzing the results of his research and make a credible and valid conclusion. Independent t-test is useful when studying independent groups of subjects alongside a continuous dependent variable. The significance (p-value)is used to establish if the significance is statistically fundamental.
