For your first writing assignment, students need to identify three criminology theories and provide an-depth summary of each.
Each summary should be 1 – 1½ pages. They should include:
I. Theory Title
II. Summary
a. How does the theory explain crime and criminal behavior
b. Who created the theory, how did they identify it (i.e. an experiment), and what did it initially entail.
c. How has the theory been expanded upon since it’s initial creation.
d. How has it been applied in recent criminological research.
III. Reference(s)
a. Use APA citation
Keep in mind, you will use these theories to explain a crime problem and solution for your second writing assignment. So as you go through them, make sure you fully understand each one, and how it can be used to explain criminal motivations and potential crime control.
Examples:
– Strain Theory
– Anomie Theory
– Rational Choice Theory
– Deterrence Theory
– Labeling Theory
– Conflict Theory
– Routine Activities Theory
– Life Course Theory
– Self-Control Theory
– Social Disorganization Theory
– Control Theory
– Social Learning (i.e. Differential Association) Theory
I implore you to also seek out other theories. However, please check with the Professor before using them, to make sure they are appropriate.
General Guidelines / Formatting
– The assignment should be at least 4 pages, excluding the title page and references (do not forget to include these). You must use APA formatting for the title page and references.
– The paper needs to be double-spaced, in Times New Roman 12-point font, have 1” margins, and be written in formal Standard English. It also needs to include page numbers.
– Please check for spelling and grammar mistakes before handing in your papers. Utilize the Writing Center if you have any issues. It is always beneficial to have someone else proofread your work.
– Drafts of the paper will not be accepted; however, discussion with the professor is strongly recommended.
– Blackboard submission is due before the beginning of class on 2/25. Late papers will result in one letter grade reduction for each day late.
Do’s
– Use empirical evidence to provide objective analysis
– Use proper in-text / references using APA citation.
Don’ts
– Use I/me/we
– Provide opinions (only use objective evidence)
– Use hypothetical/rhetorical questions
– Use tricks to make the paper look longer than it is
– Plagiarize!
