The final grade for this class is determined by a 6-8 page research paper. The paper must be standard formatting (12 inch font times new roman, 1 inch margins, double spaced). It must use appropriate citations either in Chicago, MLA or APA format.
The goal of the paper is to provide you with an opportunity to do three things:
Extend your knowledge about one issue area of international politics either armed conflict, refugee/migrant politics, or climate change politics.
Demonstrate successful application of international relations theories to these cases
Provide an opportunity for you to work synthetically about a historical event in international relations.
Each paper must satisfy the following requirements.
It must pertain to one of the following three topics: a. armed conflict b. slavery, labor exploitation, human trafficking or c. climate change
It must contain references to a minimum of 5 academic sources (scholarly journals, reviews, books) from beyond class
The paper should focus on a case or event and seek to explain this event according to international relations theories. For example, armed conflicts could include the Cold War, Vietnam War, Falklands War, ongoing wars in Yemen, Afghanistan etc. You could focus on different historical or contemporary cases of slavery or human trafficking. Climate politics could describe the effects of climate changes in different regions including transborder conflict between India and Pakistan, Japan and China, etc.
The paper should also use at least two theoretical schools from class to help explain or address the topic. These could include classical realism, neorealism, liberalism or constructivism or others.
Grades will be awarded based on three criteria:
1) successful completion of the above requirements (50%),
2) Organization and Structure (10%),
3) Writing Composition (10%),
4) Quality of the Analysis and Argumentation (30%)
