The social determinants of health for an individual or a specific population are determined by their income level, education level, race, living conditions, as well as work opportunities and access to health care. These factors interrelate with each other, and in general, they have an impact on the quality of health care outcomes, especially for their oral health. For instance, low-income families lack dental insurance and thus have limited access to oral care (Goldsteen, Goldsteen & Dwelle, 2014). Unlike their counterparts, high-income families are unable to have regular oral checkups and seek immediate medical attention if they have oral health issues. Therefore, oral health has become a public health issue that needs to be addressed. The extent to which the health outcome is greater or less between populations creates health disparities, which range from race, sexual identity, disability, as well as age, geographical location, and socioeconomic status. The oral health disparities that affect low-income families is that they lack the dental insurance that translates to having limited access to oral care. According to Schneider (2016), individuals with low income tend to be less healthy than the ones with higher incomes, thereby also having a low life expectancy.

However, the study by Siruguri & Bhat (2015) reveals that the consumption of spicy food help in preventing chronic diseases.
Other social determinants of health that affect low-income Indian families are the lack of knowledge that dietary risk factors relate to the consumption of spicy foods as they can develop canker sores. Besides, they lack dental insurance and thus limit their access to oral health care services. Therefore, as an oral health provider, I can address this issue by participating in the development, the implementation, and the evaluation of public health policy. I will ensure that I facilitate the documentation of the health status of this population and create educational programs that create awareness of oral health issues and allocating sufficient resources for quality oral health outcomes.
